Alpine has launched the second edition of its Mechanical Excellence competition

Alpine launches its second edition of the Excellence Mécanique Alpine competition and thus reiterates its commitment to students in the automotive mechanics sector throughout France.

Sponsored by Formula 1 driver Esteban Ocon, the Alpine Mechanical Excellence competition was designed and developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour, Full Employment and Integration, Ministry of National Education and Youth, ANFA, OPCO and Renault Group.

This is a national competition for students registered in the Automobile Maintenance and Automobile After-Sales sections, at the BAC and BAC+1 levels. Registrations will take place between January 3 and January 24, 2023 directly on the site: www.concours-excellence-mechanics-alpine.fr.

The first edition of the Excellence Mécanique Alpine competition highlighted the interpersonal skills and knowledge of the young students and apprentices who participated. Achille Thurotte and Robin Chaillard, winners of the first edition of the competition in 2022, completed their internship in the mechanical assembly workshop of the Alpine F1 Team stable in Viry-Châtillon.

The first phase of the immersion allowed them to discover all the assembly stations to understand the different dimensions of the machine manufacturer’s work and the different parts of the Power Unit (hydraulic power unit that motors on the Alpine A522 single-seater) before being assigned to a specific work unit for the continuation of their internship.

Their human qualities and their skills demonstrated throughout the competition events were able to express themselves fully and this in interaction with the team’s engine manufacturers. Their legitimacy was obtained as the first pair to win the competition won the teams, who enjoyed ten times the pleasure of sharing their knowledge and their paths in life. Achille Thurotte begins a new cycle of training at a school specializing in motor racing and signs an apprenticeship contract with the team, while Robin Chaillard continues his studies and towards car rally.

The first edition of the Excellence Mécanique Alpine competition allowed students enrolled in the Automobile Maintenance and Automobile After-Sales sections, at the BAC and BAC+1 levels, to gain a foothold in the world of Formula 1, which is recognized as inaccessible. 1111 students tried their luck in a competition consisting of three rounds with 18 finalists divided into 9 pairs. By passing the practical tests in pairs, the selected candidates find themselves in the conditions of using the F1 engine manufacturer profession within the team.

The evaluation therefore brings as much to the efficiency of their knowledge as to their knowledge, especially to their ability to work in a team. Beyond the experience gained in the events and the opportunity to work in situations and on unique engine parts, moments of exchange with the team’s engine specialists during regional events or the final in particular allow candidates to open their personal and professional perspectives.

Like the first edition, the second edition of the Alpine Mechanical Excellence competition will include three events:

  • A digital theoretical test to assess general knowledge of automotive mechanics to select 128 candidates for the semi-finals (February 2, 2023)
  • A practical test taking place in 8 Renault Group training centers across France with the aim of selecting 16 finalists (between March 10 and 31, 2023)
  • The final, practical test and moment of meeting and exchange, at the site of the BWT Alpine F1 Team in Viry-Châtillon (May 12 and 13, 2023)

A 3-month internship at the Alpine F1 Team mechanical assembly workshop will be offered to the pair who win the final, with the possibility of an apprenticeship contract. The duo will have the opportunity to work on the engine of the 2023 Formula 1 season and be an integral part of the team taking part in the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship.

Equal opportunities and meritocracy are part of the DNA of the Excellence Mécanique Alpine competition. To ensure the same chances of success for all participants, the financial capabilities, place of residence and training of each candidate should not be an obstacle to participation in the competition. For this, the expenses incurred by the candidates in terms of transportation or accommodation, including during the internship, will be covered.

Esteban Ocon sponsors the competition…

Esteban Ocon, who will start his third season as an Alpine driver in March 2023, renews his participation as sponsor of the Excellence Mécanique Alpine competition after taking on this role in the first edition of 2022.

Invested throughout the course of the competition and this from the opening of registrations, his arrival and the exchange with the finalists will remain one of the significant events of the first edition, both through the honesty and the nature of the exchanges and interactions- contact the finalists only through the messages sent, especially in the truth of believing in your dreams and not letting anyone take you away from them.

Sponsoring the Excellence Mécanique Alpine competition for the second edition is a pleasure and an honor. » said Esteban Ocon.

“It is an honor to encourage young people in the mechanical sector to dare to pursue their dreams, surpass themselves and listen to themselves closely without being discouraged by anyone allowing me to pass on the lessons of my life journey »

“It’s a pleasure because seeing them at work, with the desire to surpass themselves, their eyes are amazed with unassuming satisfaction while staying focused, working as a team within their pair is something that brings joy . »
