Nintendo games we played this week

Welcome to another year of gaming on Pure Nintendo! We hope your new year is off to a great start! Our premiere playlist for 2023 includes everything from sailing adventures to Mario Kart, with a healthy dose of TMNT thrown in for good measure.

That’s right, sailing. Sail Forth is here to bring open-world adventure to the water. With a Windwaker feel, lots of islands to explore, and even dolphins to track down, it’s a pretty unique title.

Oh, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – is there anything you can’t do? This game showed renewed interest from the team last year thanks to the first three waves of DLC content. We got together for game night recently and spent a lot of time on the road. It’s as good as ever; and now that we have tons of new tunes to enjoy, revisiting the original is fresh again!

With two major releases last year, Pokémon should be on our playlist for quite some time. We are playing the same title in 2022 while still enjoying Arceus and Scarlet/Violet. Who knows what 2023 has in store for this franchise?

The only question left is: what games are you playing at the moment? Maybe this year is the year you can catch up … we tell ourselves the same thing every year! For now, let us know your playlist titles.

Purely Nintendo Playlist

Roger

  • Navigate forward (Switch) – I really like this sailing game – with Windwaker Vibes. I love how open world it is, and while there is a story to be told in this game, a big part of how the narrative unfolds is how you play the game, creating your own adventures.

  • Children of Silenttown (Switch) – This puzzle adventure is coming to an end before it releases on January 11th, and I’ll be sad when it does. If you’ve ever liked a Daedalic game, you’ll like this one too. My review next week will have all the great details.
  • Snarling Fish 2 (Move) – I don’t usually go to arcade fighting games, but our original reviewer got injured in… shall we say training… so I’m going to the fight. We’ll find out soon if I can get away.
  • Nintendo Switch Sports (Switch) – My family’s traditional New Year’s Eve game night piqued our interest here, and that means we’ll be spamming it for a while. I’ve given up on beating my kids at some games, but I think I can get them into golf with a little practice.

Trev

  • Mario Kart 8 DX (Switch) – I posted a highlight of this on the PN Twitter, so be sure to check it out.
  • Paper (Move) – This is a great game, and if my review isn’t posted by the time this list is done, it will be done soon.
  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus (Switch) – My second for GOTY, slowly building my Pokedex… when my husband isn’t busy playing; he is in front of me.
  • TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge (Switch) – A favorite of the PN team, I played quite a bit online with Jemma and Justin. I’ll have to revisit The Cowabunga Collection next time and check out the update.

Jemma

  • Pokémon Violet (Switch) – I love this game. It makes me happy. The music, the wide open space, the Pokemon…it was pure bliss. I’m still working my way through Titans, so this is a game I’ll be playing for a while!
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) – I can’t get enough of Mario Kart, but the latest DLC gives us all a reason to pick it up! We hung out with new and old classes at a recent Pure Nintendo Games Night. Sorry Trev! You can also read my thoughts on wave 3 of the booster course pass.
  • TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge (Switch) – This was one of my highlights of 2022 and another game of the night included. So much fun to play with friends!
  • River Town Girls 2 (Move) – I’m checking out this interesting beat right now. So many positives, but one negative that unfortunately ruins the experience. Watch for my review soon!
  • Courage and Greed (Move) – Another review title, this is a fun roguelike with great pixel graphics and plenty of looting to do. Look out for my next review!
