It has been dubbed by some, and has been since the beginning of marketing, the Renault “Platitude”. A humor that emphasizes, needless to say, its discomfort and personality, especially the style.
So, Latitude is to car production what the Netherlands is to European topography?
It really should be recognized that this grand tourer, with Korean origins at the base (it’s a rebadged Samsung SM5), lacks identity, and its design can be described as “smart”, very smart. Front face, profiles, back face do not show any originality. What blandness! Not ugly for all that, it’s true, but no one turns, nor will they turn from its path. Never.
And in the cabin, the same. The dashboard is a classicism that borders on boredom. At least the ergonomics of the controls are good, unlike the quality of the finish, which is not even equal to a Laguna 3. And the equipment is worthy of a top of the range time, with tri-zone air conditioning , a driver’s seat massage, an ionization air purifier, navigation, an internet connection, directional headlights, in the Initiale finish.
Road characteristics? Relative… If comfort is soft, soundproofing is successful, and the space allocated to passengers is correct, dynamism is absent, and you should not expect to drive fast and efficiently. In contrast, the Latitude lives at the speed of a senator. A regret, especially since we can, for example, count on a 240 hp V6 diesel engine, which offers quite interesting performance (0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 s. and 235 km/h at top speed ). points).
In fact, his failure was such that Renault decided to cut short his career, which lasted only from 2011 to 2015. And we have to admit that we rarely meet them on the road. Do you remember the last time? I have no memory of it… Nothing more than the Fiat Croma 2 SW which was the subject of the first article in this section.
Ribs blush with daisies
In fact, if we’re talking about the Latitude here, it’s because its quality is elsewhere. It is undoubtedly affordable. In fact, it is forgotten in the second-hand market, whose prices are even lower than the floor level, and are easier to negotiate, which is seen as advertisements drag the rows of sites of classifieds.
It should be noted here that its new prices, if they are not as high as the premium models before, are also not given. The starting price is €34,000 for a basic 2.0 dCi 150 in Business finish, while the V6 dCi 240 hp in high Initiale finish is still priced at €46,300. Prices that have barely changed, and for good reason, during their career. The unstoppable momentum of sales must not be broken! A Citroën C5, for information, is bought between €3,000 and €5,000 less than a comparable model.
In concrete terms, there are now Latitudes starting at €3,500. Either the price of a gasoline city car from 2007/2008. As we are dealing with a big diesel road 4.88 m long! Certainly, copies at this price are not perfect in terms of bodywork, and there are more than 200,000 km, even 250,000 km, proof of proper reliability, by the way. And it should be noted that these are diesels, since the Latitude only existed in France in diesel (2.0 150 hp BVM and 175 BVA6, V6 3.0 240 hp BVA) and therefore they benefit from a Crit’Air Vignette 2, which does not pose. too many problems at the moment, but may prove to be a handicap in the future with the ZFE-m. So not everyone will be interested in buying the Latitude.
But those who can consider it will do business. In fact, beyond the cheapest models on the market, there are also 150 hp manual gearbox models from 2012, showing less than 80,000 km, for less than €10,000! To give you an idea, a Peugeot 508 with equivalent power (2.0 HDI 140 or 160/163) and comparable mileage is on average €2,000 more expensive! Even the Citroën C5, which is also avoided, sells for an average of €1,000 more. When they show 150,000 km on the odometer, examples in good condition sell for only around €5,000!
We are not talking here, for example, of a Honda Accord, which cannot be seen at €5,000, and which for €10,000 will show at least 160,000 km! Not even the premium models (Audi A6, BMW 5 Series), which in addition to their superior performance, resell at least around 16,000 € for a 2012 diesel model of 177 hp or 184 hp , showing an average of 170,000 km.
The Latitude V6 diesels are not much more expensive than the 4-cylinders. There are good examples from 2012, 140,000 km, for €7,500. And negotiable. They are almost the best bargains, for those who want to have fun, because the performance and the pleasure are higher than those of the 4 cylinder, the smoothness and the noise too. And the discount compared to the new price is more important. Note here that an Initial diesel V6 from 2012 sold for €46,000 before, that’s a discount of 84%. At the same time, an equivalent Bmw 530d sells for €16,000, which is a discount of only 70%.
THE BALANCE SHEET
The question we ask ourselves, however, is: can we decently recommend buying a second-hand Renault Latitude today? For some, the answer is an unequivocal no.
Objectively, in terms of services, there are better ones in the second-hand market. It’s obvious.
But in terms of budget, it’s pretty unbeatable, and you can make a very, very good deal! And even, by paying a little more than the standard price, end up with ultra-equipped copies, showing ridiculously low mileage, or a pleasant V6 diesel engine.
So financially, it is a big yes, especially since the reliability of this model is very good, and will not put you in trouble after the purchase. The rest is up to you…
