What is Polestar? What EV models does it sell?

Polestar is one of the newcomers to the EV segment, and this automaker has changed a lot since becoming an independent brand. Although many people don’t know about Polestar, its parent company, Volvo, is a pretty famous automaker.

These two automakers are intrinsically linked, and their story may surprise you. Polestar is expanding its presence in the electric vehicle segment, and its current and future offerings are amazing.

Polestar was originally a Swedish racing team called Flash Engineering. Volvo and Flash Engineering collaborated to create a vehicle for the Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC) in 1996.

The newly formed union enjoyed great success, as they ended up winning the STCC in their first attempt. After that Flash Engineering was sold and changed its name to the better known Polestar Racing.

As you can see, the roots of the brand are strongly linked to the world of racing and its history is rich in motorsports. Polestar Racing eventually became Volvo’s partner in extracting speed from its cars.

Eventually, Volvo bought Polestar’s street car performance division. This division still exists today and has been renamed Cyan Racing. Polestar eventually became its own brand, and while its roots are deep in internal combustion motorsports, its future is electric.

The brand hopes to become a major player in the electric vehicle segment, leading the charge of EV makers using sustainable materials in their vehicles and concept cars.

And if the brand has a lot of strength, Polestar certainly has a lot of work to do to win against heavyweights like Tesla.

What is Polestar now?

Currently, Polestar is its own brand. The Swedish manufacturer is based in Gothenburg, Sweden, which is not surprising considering that Volvo owns it. But what might surprise you is that Polestar manufactures its Polestar 2 EV in Luqiao, China.

However, it all makes more sense when you consider that Geely, one of China’s leading automakers, bought the Volvo brand from Ford. China is also a big market for EVs, so it is very important for EV manufacturers to have a local presence in the country.

As of now, the company does not have an extensive vehicle portfolio. However, the successful racing team has become a Volvo tuner that hopes to channel its successes into its next endeavor – the creation of high-performance EVs.

Polestar isn’t an instantly recognizable brand in the automotive world, but the Swedish automaker hopes to change that. During its short history, most of the brand’s offerings were limited to modified Volvo vehicles or wacky concept cars. But with the Polestar 2 and upcoming Polestar 3 EV, the company hopes to change that.

What cars does Polestar make?

The Polestar 1 was the company’s first model. However, it is no longer in production. For now, you can only get the Polestar 2, but we expect to see the Polestar 3 in showrooms soon.

Polestar 1

The Polestar 1 is no longer available for sale as a new car, but it was the car that started the brand’s solo act. This is a rare car, with only 1,500 of these bad boys currently on the road.

Most of the reviews for this car look like a Volvo, and to be honest, it looks like a regular Volvo. But what can’t be said is that this car is slow.

The Polestar 1 has 609 horsepower – it’s definitely not your grandfather’s Volvo. The Polestar 1’s biggest asset is its hybrid powertrain. The car features a combination of electric motors and a supercharged and turbocharged engine, which delivers a whopping 1000Nm of torque. It also boasts a pure electric range of 77 miles.

This figure is impressive when compared to other hybrid vehicles. The only downside to the incredible Polestar model is its price, which still tops $100,000 for a used one.

Polestar 2

The Polestar 2 is the brand’s current bread and butter. This odd-looking EV is one of the best competitors to the Tesla Model 3 currently on sale. Its unique styling may not appeal to everyone, but the vehicle certainly stands out from the competition’s cheap offerings.

Its performance is also excellent, especially if you opt for the twin-motor version of the Polestar 2. But if you don’t need to go from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds, the single-motor Polestar 2 FWD should be more than enough.

Both of these configurations offer more than 250 miles of range, so road trips with the Polestar 2 shouldn’t be a problem either. The Polestar 2 is a great EV, but it’s just the beginning of the brand’s forward-thinking plan for the global market.

Polestar 3

The Polestar 3 is the brand’s next attempt to offer one of the best electric SUVs you can buy. It’s a luxury SUV, and its price clearly reflects that. It starts at $83,900 and is expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2023.

It sure is expensive, especially considering the range is around 300 miles. As an example, the Tesla Model Y offers a range of 330 miles for $65,990.

It might be boring at this point to bring up Tesla’s competitor for the Polestar 3, but it’s inevitable. Tesla dominates the EV scene, and its cars don’t come cheap. Therefore, you expect something more when a competitor is sold at a higher price.

Either way, the best thing about the Polestar 3 is its styling. This is Polestar’s best car to date, apart from some of its concept cars. Polestar’s design language really works best in an SUV form factor, and the whole look is sleek and futuristic at the same time.

Even though this SUV is expensive, it looks better than any Tesla SUV, and it can fly off the shelves.

Polestar wants to dominate the EV segment

Polestar is not a company that just wants to get along. He takes a unique approach, and it shows in his models. Additionally, all Polestar vehicles are built with a focus on design and durability.

This is definitely a brand to watch in the coming years. Judging by its excellent initial products, the Polestar name is something to reckon with in the electric vehicle segment.
