5 video game mascots who deserve a second chance
Gaming mascots were the thing back then. You are Team Mario or Team Sonic and fight wars to see which side is superior. Today, apart from a few survivors, we don’t see many obscure faces and iconic creatures on our screens. For some, it’s best to leave them alone, but others deserve a second chance at life.
This isn’t a list of the most forgotten or overrated game characters or mascots, but rather some games that had some really entertaining games at the time. If given the chance again, these five are in a position to truly shine as long as time and effort give them the spotlight again.
5. Spyro the Dragon
Kicking off our list is Spyro, who is probably the character with the highest chance of making a comeback. There have been recent rumors that Spyro and Skylanders could be hitting our screens as soon as this year, and while nothing has been confirmed, it’s something we’re excited about.
This is an announcement:
Spyro’s last outing was released in 2018, which might make you think it has a second chance, but Spyro: Reignited Trilogy is just a remaster of its first three adventures. Really, we need another full Spyro experience to bring us back the feel of those original games without just repeating them. Spyro continues to be a recognizable face in the game, and fans are always asking for more purple dragons. Its return could give us another great adventure platformer.
4. Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo-Kazooie, although two characters, cannot be seen without each other, so they are both here as one entry on this list. Once again, we saw our favorite bears and birds recently, as they appeared as DLC characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. However, the last time we had a game dedicated to them was in 2008 with the highly received Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.
This is an announcement:
Banjo-Tooie is still remembered as one of the greatest platformers of all time, and rightfully so, so it would be foolish to let Banjo-Kazooie die forever without at least giving them another chance. . Unlike Spyro, we can’t imagine seeing modern remakes of the first two games so studios can test the waters and see if the IP still pays off. Because, as much as we love these characters, it’s clear that money still rules the gaming world.
3. Ty the Tasmanian Tiger
From two (technically three) well-known and beloved characters in the gaming world, to a creature you’ve never heard of. Ty the Tasmanian Tiger is a 2002 game that sees Ty fight the evil cassowary Boss Cass and collect five artifacts known as Thunder Eggs.
The game sold well and spawned three sequels, even getting a remastered version in 2020. While Ty may have slipped under the radar compared to a big name like Spyro, another game with boomerang hero can work. Although we recently saw Ty in the remaster, again, it wasn’t enough to remake the game to really try and push the character back into the spotlight, and it would be exciting to see a proper return for Ty.
2. Worm Jim
We haven’t seen the amazing Earthworm Jim since 2010, and that was in Earthworm Jim HD, which was just a remake. Worm in a Spacesuit has one of the biggest potentials for a fresh new game. Beyond its engaging platforming gameplay, Earthworm Jim is most recognizable for its unique brand of humor.
Earthworm Jim’s wacky and surreal take on comedy combined with his innovative art style gives him a unique personality that will make him stand out even in today’s saturated gaming market. Earthworm Jim is a hero unique and recognizable enough to give us a high-level platform when we need it.
1. Sly Cooper
2023 marks ten years since we last saw our favorite raccoon in Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. Sly Cooper feels like the character that some have robbed of the light he should have had. In 2016, it was announced that there would be a spin-off film starring the character, but that adaptation was quietly shelved.
We have no news of a Sly Cooper game coming out, and although leaks say that every year is when we hear more about Sly 5, nothing official matches these rumors. Like every other character on this list, Sly Cooper has such a loyal fan base that it would be the biggest crime to leave him out without any new titles coming out.
There are several other characters that deserve their own new titles like Rayman, Bubsy, and Ecco the Dolphin, but unfortunately this list was only able to fit 5 entries. Know another video game mascot that needs some love? Inform us.
