the price of radicalism

Zapping The Blogauto Alpine A110 test

Under the hood, there is the 6-cylinder in-line M TwinPower Turbo that is already under the hood of the M3 or the M4. Cubic three liters (2993 cm3 exactly), it generates 550 horsepower at 6250 rpm and a torque of 650 Nm between 2750 and 5950 rpm. Its curb weight rises to 1765 kg empty DIN standard or 1840 kg EU standard. It is heavy, very heavy and far from ballerina.

So much effort for little result

However, BMW uses carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) throughout to lighten while stiffening the car. The roof is made of carbon fiber, the bonnet, front splitter, air intakes, exterior mirror caps, diffuser and rear spoiler are also made of carbon fiber. The tubs also use carbon and the inside is quite a bit of CFRP. The muffler is titanium. In total, BMW managed to make the M3 Competition xDrive lose 20 kg to give this M3 CS. That’s a lot of effort for a 1% profit at scale!

The BMW M3 CS will therefore rely on the cavalry hoping that it will arrive on time. On homologation, BMW announced 10.4 – 10.1 l/100 km or 234 – 229 g of CO2/km WLTP cycle. This is very strong compared to the M3 Competition’s 10.1/10.0 or 230/228 g/km. Almost as much consumption was approved for 40 more horses. BMW says the engine is more rigidly mounted to the chassis, which improves throttle response.

Crazy performance

Result, in performance, we have 0 to 100 km / h in 3.4 seconds, and a 0 to 200 km / h in 11.1 seconds. It can reach 302 km/h at top speed. For the M3 CS, BMW renews the M xDrive 4-wheel transmission with an electronically controlled multi-plate transfer case to distribute power between the front and rear. On the rear axle, there is an Active M differential. The M3 CS is propulsion typed to be playful while efficient.

The chassis has been modified to be more circuit-like. Brakes are standard in M Compound and can be had in carbon ceramic as an option. Forged light-alloy wheels in golden bronze finish are standard. 19 inches at the front, 20 inches at the rear, they are fitted with 275/35 ZR19 and 285/30 ZR20 track tires. Obviously, one might prefer the “high performance” tire instead.

A feather at the height of the rampage

To express the color and show that this is not an M3 Competition beast, therefore we have a slightly more bestial front than for the Competition. The overall shape remains the same but the low grilles disappear in favor of simple wide-open intakes. The radiator grille is also simplified and you can just run your hand over it! The two large beans are circled in red. The front lights are jaundiced (like a GT car) and the car has two black stripes on the hood.

Aesthetically, this BMW M3 CS is dislocated. Maybe a little “too much”, but hey, you gotta show the knight without sounding the charge. The L6 twinturbo and its 550 horsepower remain certified at around 10 liters per 100 km. And we bet the chassis is being refined by the M department.

On the other hand, BMW kept all the comfort equipment and driving aids in its M3 CS. Quite ironic for a car that likes to run off the rails. There’s standard navigation, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, phone integration, induction charging, on-board wifi, head-up display, BMW Drive Recorder, etc. And in addition to Comfort Access, automatic dual-zone air conditioning, Harman Kardon sound system, parking radar, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, or intelligent regulator.

In such a car, one would expect all of this to go as an option to make the car lighter. With more than 1800 kg in running order, this BMW M3 CS will be more comfortable on autobahns and big fast circuits than tight corners.

to summarize

If it basically takes the look of the M3 Competition, the new BMW M3 CS goes even further to radicalism. It gains 20 kilograms on the scale while using 40 more horsepower for a total of 550 horsepower. Typed circuit according to BMW, it does not forget the comfort of the passengers and finally there is its irony.

Is this new BMW M3 CS more GT than CS?
