AUTOMOBILE: FlexFuel Energy Development publishes its barometer of the most fuel-efficient vehicles

After installing +234% of E85 boxes in 2022, FLEXFUEL ENERGY DEVELOPMENT publishes its barometer of the most fuel-efficient vehicles.

In 2022, in the context of general inflation, motorists rush to Superethanol-E85 conversion units that make it possible to drive cheaper and greener. FLEXFUEL ENERGY DEVELOPMENT (FFED), pioneer and leader in FlexFuel enclosures, adjusts to an exceptional year with a 234% growth in its installations of E85 enclosures and consolidates its leading position. In 2023 which is also set to be inflationary, FFED mobilizes for its customers and publishes its barometer on the most economical vehicles.

Superethanol-E85, still competitive?

In 2022, heavily affected by the rising price of conventional fuels, motorists are turning to E85 en masse, thus cutting their fuel budget in half.

Historically, E85 has been the cheapest fuel on the market. As a result of general inflation, Superethanol-E85 has increased by an average of €0.30 since the beginning of 2023. At the same time, other fuels have increased by an average of €0.15.

At €1.1083/l on average compared to €1.8748/l on average for SP95-E10, E85 remains €0.7665 cheaper. For a “typical motorist”, there is a difference of around €35 every time you fill up. E85 is therefore still competitive and remains the only simple and accessible alternative for driving cheaper and greener. (1)

More than 400€ of fuel savings per year

By including a maximum excess consumption of 25%, E85 saves €445 in fuel per year compared to SP95-E10 for a 13,000 km trip and €685 for a 20,000 km trip.

By 2022, E85 sees its consumption increase by 82.6%. E85 is now distributed at 3,300 service stations, i.e. 1 station in 3 (+20% in 1 year).

More ecologically, E85 reduces CO2 emissions by 50% and fine particle emissions by 90% compared to conventional fuels.

+234% installation of FlexFuel boxes by 2022

With the increase in fuel prices, installations of FlexFuel boxes jumped 234%.

After installing 16,106 boxes in 2021, 53,902 FlexFuel boxes were installed in the FFED network in 2022 out of 85,000 boxes installed by the entire sector. Thus FFED consolidates its leading position.

At the end of September, the company passed the milestone of 100,000 users since its creation in 2009 and the market remains large (10 million cars). Roulezpascher.com, the online sales platform for FlexFuel boxes, has also benefited in this context. It shows a growth of 20% with 1051 sales.

A network growing by 25%

The FFED network continues to expand, bringing the number of centers trained and authorized to install boxes to 2,501 compared to 2,000 in 2021.

It consists of independent installers, partnerships with the main market players (Autobacs, Autodistribution, Autolia, Avia-Picoty, First Stop and Côté Route, IDLP, Midas, Norauto, Point S, Siligom, Speedy, etc.) and several cars dealerships.

Norauto, Autodistribution and Speedy were the installers that installed the most FlexFuel boxes in 2022.

The barometer of the most economical vehicles in mixed use

To choose an economical vehicle, it is advisable to study the general environment of the car (fuel budget, acquisition cost, registration document and taxes, autonomy, maintenance, insurance, discount).

FFED studied and selected the most economical cars for mixed use (urban, extra-urban, motorway): reliable, sensible and above all very easy and cheap to maintain.

Jérôme Loubert, FFED’s European Development Director, said: “In the current context of inflation, it is becoming urgent for a large number of French people to save money. A vehicle that runs on E85 allows savings at all levels of the car budget. “.

Key points about state-approved FlexFuel boxes:

9 out of 10 petrol vehicles are compatible with the installation of a FlexFuel unit, including vehicles equipped with a Particle Filter and vehicles of 15 HP and more

The box must be approved and installed by a trained and authorized professional

The purchase and installation of an approved unit ranges from €699 including tax to €1,500 including tax depending on the vehicle’s engine capacity. FFED prices have not changed in 2022 and remain the most competitive on the market

Installing a box allows you to get a free gray card for so-called clean vehicles (up to a limit of €750), except in Centre-Val de Loire, Brittany and Hauts- de-France where it is half price and Grand Est, New Aquitaine and Pays de la Loire where it is paid

2 regions (Hauts-de-France (€500) , Ile-de-France (€500)), 1 department (Oise) and municipality offer E85 conversion aid

Thanks to the aid schemes put in place by local authorities, which can represent half the budget for installing a box (500 euros), motorists can pay back their investment in less than a year.

Most cars running on E85 are not affected by ZFE (Crit’Air 1). Some cities offer exemptions regardless of the Crit’Air sticker (Montpellier, Grand Reims)

FlexFuel boxes “made in France” are guaranteed for 5 years

The manufacturer’s legal warranty is taken by FFED for all parts that come into contact with E85. For other parts, the manufacturer’s warranty continues to apply

Reprogramming is illegal because it changes the original parameters of the vehicle and leads to rejection of the technical inspection.
